After breakfast, our first stop is Heavenly Lake. In the summer, Heavenly Lake is an ideal cool resort. Boaters on it see the ever-changing silvery mountains soaring into the blue sky, their slopes highlighted with verdant pasture and flamboyant wildflowers. Fishing at dusk has its special charm. A day in this fairyland promises restoration. Heavenly Lake, a relic of the Quaternary Period Glacier and its surrounding geological relics, offers science lovers exploring opportunities. Later, we will start our journey and arrive in the Altay region at night.

Koktokay is a township with significant history involving China and the Soviet Union because it has the world’s largest mineral deposit of rare metals, known as
Pit No. 3. In the morning, we will travel to Koktokay, which has one of the most
beautiful National Parks in China. This area is dominated by Kazakhs, where an
age-old nomadic culture was born, joining the people with the land. The Irtysh
River flows through Koktokay, reflecting a blaze of color every year in different
seasons. In the late afternoon, we will drive to Burqin and check in to our hotel.

After a 2-hour drive to Kanas, explore this UNESCO Global Geopark—one of Xinjiang’s most stunning destinations. Meaning “gorgeous and mysterious” in Mongolian, Kanas Lake sits 800 km from Urumqi amid Siberian taiga forests, snow-capped peaks, and birch woodlands. Dubbed the “Switzerland of the East,” it’s a photographer’s paradise with abundant wildlife. Visit Tuva and Kazakh families to learn about local culture, or enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, rafting, and paragliding. Tonight, enjoy a live performance by The Marmot Tuva music band at our hotel.

After breakfast, explore Kanas highlights. Take the shuttle (extra fee) to Guanyu Viewing Platform, 600 meters up, for panoramic views of Kanas Lake, snow-capped peaks, and the Three Bays—Moon Bay, Shenxian Bay, and Wolong Bay. Or enjoy a two-hour lake cruise. The lake’s elegant crescent curve nestles among trees, offering one of China’s most photogenic spots. September is especially stunning when changing colors and Tuva villages create a serene, picture-perfect setting.

Rise early for sunrise over Hemu Village—China’s northernmost village and largest of the three remaining Tuva settlements. Nestled deep in the Altay Mountains near Kanas, this “Private Land of God” is home to Tuva descendants of Genghis Khan’s soldiers who still speak the rare Tuva language and practice traditional hunting and nomadic lifestyles. Watch smoke curl from wooden houses amid morning mist, extensive birch forests, and distant snowy peaks. Its serene beauty, oil-painting autumn colors, and ethereal winter landscapes draw visitors year-round.

After breakfast, head south to visit the Karamay World Ghost Town. This unique attraction consists of yardang landforms in the middle of the Junggar Desert in China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang. Although it’s challenging to reach, the views it offers are spectacular and unlike anything else in the world. Located about an hour north of Karamay, near the smaller city of Wuerhe, it is a natural wonder formed by intense winds that sweep across the desert, creating eerie sounds that have earned it the nickname “Ghost Town.”
